[ARCHIVED] Earth Day at Home

Earth Day at Home. Globe in shape of heart in green grass.

In light of flattening the curve for the spread of the Coronavirus, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued a statewide stay-at-home order earlier this month with the exception of essential activities and services.

With kids being out of school (and planet enthusiasts working from home), many will feel that they will miss out on celebrating Earth Day (April 22) on its 50th anniversary this year.

However, even in the midst of transitioning to a new social distancing norm, there are still ways that everyone can celebrate our earth this year and be more sustainable at home:

  • Refresh your memory on what is recyclable in our City. Visit Apopka’s Recycling page for a list of accepted items.
  • Adjust your thermostat to help conserve electricity.
  • For home offices, choose recyclable office supplies and supplies made with recycled content. These may include office paper, stationary, etc. When purchasing printer cartridges, be sure to take note of how to recycle them.
  • Use energy-efficient LED light bulbs.
  • Turn off computer and home office electronics when not in use.
  • Twin the bin in your home office by locating a recycling container beside your garbage container.
  • Reuse discarded office paper for homemade crafts and other activities.
  • Recycling Scavenger Hunt around the house and yard, letting the kids find empty bottles, cans, and cartons as well as old newspapers, magazines, and cardboard.
  • Educate the kids on the benefits of recycling, including opportunities to create homemade recycling containers for bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms, which produce the majority of recyclables in the home.
  • Try some new plant-based recipes.
  • Start a garden in your yard.
  • Take a walk/bike ride through the neighborhood or visit a trail. Just remember to stay 6 feet away from others!
