[ARCHIVED] Northwest Recreation Complex Pine Tree Removal

Pine Trees at Apopka Northwest Recreation Complex

Pine tree removal at the Northwest Recreation Complex and city property on the east side of Jason Dwelley Parkway is scheduled to take place over the next few weeks. This is necessary due to Flathead Wood Borer insects attacking the Pine trees, which were originally planted for logging purposes. These insects target stressed trees and have affected Pine trees throughout Florida. The only remedy is to remove the affected trees. Several hundred Pine trees have been affected in the area in and around the Northwest Recreation Complex.

After consulting with several arborists and analyzing all of our options, a recommendation was made to City Council to remove all of the Pine trees. City Council approved that recommendation at the April 3, 2019 meeting. There is a concept plan in place to replace many of the trees with oaks, magnolias, cedars and cypress trees. Trees will be replaced as soon as possible and planting is expected to begin this fall. We are committed to creating a landscape that will benefit our city and our residents for many generations to come.
