City of Apopka Highlights for June 2023
Apopka Youth Works Program
The City, in partnership with CareerSource Central Florida and the Apopka Area Chamber of Commerce, sponsored the annual Apopka Youth Works Program (AYW). AYW is a paid, summer internship that gives teenagers real work experience. As part of the program, students receive soft skills training to prepare them for work including a job fair where they interview with local businesses. We had 130 students participate this summer.
Downtown Transportation Improvements
The City held a ribbon cutting ceremony at the corner of Main and Central to highlight the recently completed $3.5 million dollar improvements along Highway 441 from Bradshaw to Central. This resurfacing, restoration and rehabilitation project was a partnership between the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the City. Thank you to FDOT for resurfacing the road and installing medians to improve vehicle and pedestrian safety. In addition, the City added landscaping and decorative crosswalks as a beautification project for the downtown area. In the next several months, the City plans to install wayfinding signage as well.
Department of Defense Award
The Department of Defense awarded Chief McKinley and the Apopka Police Department the Patriotic Employer Award for contributing to national security and protecting liberty and freedom by supporting employee participation in America's National Guard and Reserve.
Remembering Edward Bass
It is with great sadness we announce the death of our City Administrator, Edward Bass. Edward served the City of Apopka well for over seventeen years. A life wonderfully lived deserves to be wonderfully remembered. Edward will be sorely missed. The City plans to dedicate the administrative conference room in his honor.

Funding from Tallahassee
The City of Apopka championed two projects that made it into the state budget recently approved by the Governor! Thanks to the partnership between the City, Senator Jason Brodeur, and State Representative Doug Bankson, the City received $2.5 million dollars for the Apopka Wekiva Springs Region Aquifer Recharge and Flood Protection project to eliminate flooding in the Border Lake, Lake Cortez, Piedmont Lakes area as well as $2 million dollars for the Apopka Regional Trail Connections project to connect trails in the Central Florida region.
Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
The City of Apopka’s Parks and Recreation Department hosted a ribbon cutting to celebrate the renovations to the Fran Carlton Center including new flooring, lighting, updated kitchen and bathrooms, and new furniture. Ms. Fran Carlton herself was on hand to help with the event. The community center is named after Fran, a former state representative who helped secure funding for the building in the 1980s.
Apopka Police Department's K9 Artemis
Although our very own Apopka Police Department's K9 Artemis didn't win the Apopka Dog Mayor contest, he is still a winner in our books. Be sure to check out the Apopka Dog Mayor page to learn more about the contest and upcoming events! Artemis has assisted in the recovery of marijuana, methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine and cocaine base. He has also assisted in the recovery of $185,206 related to illegal narcotics investigations.
Apopka Police Department's Accreditation for Dispatch
Congratulations to the Apopka Police Department's Communications Division and their Communication Technicians for their recent accreditation from the Florida Telecommunications Accreditation Commission (FLA-TAC). Currently, there are only 25 centers across the state who are accredited under FLA-TAC. This accomplishment makes the Apopka Communications Center a standout among others across the state. Congratulations again!
