The Criminal Investigations Section of the agency is divided into Strategic Investigations and General Investigations and is supervised by a Captain with the assistance of a Lieutenant.
Strategic Investigations
Strategic Investigations is led by a sergeant and focuses on vice and drug crimes. The department has partnered with the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Metropolitan Bureau of Investigation to enforce the law and reduce crime.
These are plain clothes officers in unmarked vehicles that can conduct specific investigations involving drug buys, using informants, conducting surveillance, and the service of high risk warrants.
General Investigations
General Investigations is led by a sergeant and conducts follow-up on crimes initially investigated by members of patrol. These law enforcement officers specialize in specific crimes and utilize various tools to conduct thorough examinations of crimes to identify perpetrators not initially located at the scene. Many of these include crimes against a person which would include:
- All deaths
- Assaults
- Batteries
- Cyber crimes
- Missing persons
- Sex crimes (includes rapes and sexual assaults)
- White collar crimes such as fraud and identity theft
