What is Hazardous Waste?
Collection Events in 2022
The 2022 Community Collection events in Orange County will be on hold due to COVID. The Orange County Government Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off Locations have updated their hours at the Porters Transfer Station and the Orange County Landfill, located at 5901 Young Pines Road, is temporarily closed. Please check the Orange County Government Household Hazardous Waste page for updates and more information.
Hazard Labels
It is defined as any product that includes any of the following words on its label:
- Acid
- Caustic
- Corrosive
- Danger
- Explosive
- Flammable
- Pesticide
- Poison
- Warning
Latex or oil based paints, and items containing mercury, such as fluorescent lights and thermostats, are also considered hazardous waste.
Household Hazardous Products
Here are some other common household hazardous products. This is not a complete list, but it will help you understand which products you should be especially cautious about.
- Cleaning products: strippers, cleaners, and soaps.
- Fertilizers: liquid and granular.
- Herbicides: weed killers, tree stump rotters.
- LP Gas bottles
- Pesticides: insect killers, rodent killers.
- Petroleum Products: gasoline, oil, and diesel fuel.
- Pool chemicals: chlorine, acids.
- Rechargeable batteries: Ni-cad, Lithium.
- Unknown or unlabeled products.
- Wet paint: oil and water based, aerosols, stains.
